Tags

Tags can be useful if you know of content on your site that may be subject to change. With tags, you can make the change in one place and have it applied to multiple spots. Let’s take a look at how this feature may be useful to you.

First you’ll want to sign into your site manager. For instructions on this, click here.

Next, you’ll click on the “Tags” link in the blue bar on top of the site manager:

Here you will see a list of existing page tags that have already been set up for you to use.  Note that the Reserved tags can not be altered, but you can add additional tags.

We’ll start with the Reserved Tags.  As an example, if you added the tag {city} anywhere in your website content, on the published site you’d see it replaced with “Winooski.”  If you move office locations to a new city, you’d simply change the Replacement Text for that city tag and all instances of {city} will update.

Let’s take a look at how you’d implement a tag on one of your web pages.  We’ll use the Contact page as an example.  Navigate over to your Contact page by clicking on the Site Map icon:

Then click on the Contact page:

There are two places on your contact page that list your location.  We’ll add a tag in each spot, starting with the location listed at the top of the page.  When the gray or beige box appears as you scroll over the contact information, click it to pop up the editing window:

You can now insert the tag by typing it out.  The brackets are located next to the “P” letter key on your keyboard.

Make sure to click the Save button at the bottom of the editor window.  You’ll see the tag now inserted in place of your city name on the Contact page:

You’ll want to repeat this process again in the footer, and choose the “Save All Pages’ Footers.”

Now let’s go back to the Tag editor by clicking on the “Tags” link at the top of the page.

We’ll change the Replacement Text for the {city} tag to Burlington:

Now,  if you publish the site by clicking the “Publish” button at the top of the site manager:

Once the site finishes publishing you can see, on your Contact page, that Winooski has been replaced with Burlington in both places that your {city} tag was added:

Now let’s take a look at how to add a custom tag..  From within the Tag menu, you’ll see an Add Row  link.  You can click on that to enter a new tag using whatever descriptive word you want.  Please note that you can’t use spaces in the tag name, and the tag names are case-sensitive.

Enter the tag name and replacement text into the two fields that appear, then hit “save”:

Now you’re free to enter your {domainname} tag in any content area on your site and when you publish, you’ll see the replacement text in it’s place.
